The Basics of Sleep

In Mattress 101, Sleep Disorders, Tossing and Turning

Getting a good night’s sleep is important since sleep enables people to concentrate more and solve problems better. Many people have trouble sleeping, but there are steps people can take to get more and better shut-eye.

In order to get a good night’s sleep, there are some things people should avoid, especially near bedtime. Caffeine and nicotine should be avoided near bedtime as they are stimulants that can keep people awake. While alcohol is a depressant, people should also not drink it before going to sleep as it can interfere with a person’s sleep patterns. Those who want to sleep well at night should also avoid large meals and beverages before bedtime.

There are other things that people who wish to avoid tossing and turning at night should not do. People should not exercise too close to bedtime as this elevates a person’s heart rate. Nobody should take naps after 3 pm, and power naps should only last an hour. Lying awake in bed for longer than 20 minutes is also a bad idea; if a person is still awake 20 minutes after climbing in bed, he or she should get up and do a relaxing activity until sleepy.

Not everything is negative in regards to good sleep hygiene; there are several things people can do to get better sleep. For example, doing something relaxing before bed such as taking a nice, warm bath can help calm a person and help him or her sleep. Sticking to a good sleep schedule and having a relaxing sleep environment are also helpful sleep aids.
